Juneteenth Commemoration

The stock market is closed today in honor of Juneteenth. At Griffin Asset Management, Juneteenth is a very important holiday for us. It marks the last day African Americans slaves were freed from slavery and is also called the “Second Independence Day”.  The origins of Juneteenth date back to June 19, 1865 – more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation – when the Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. June 19, 2024, is the 3rd year this day was made a federal holiday.
