Why investment policy statements matter

By Brian Famigletti, Managing Director & Head of Marketing

What are investment policy statements?

Investment policy statements serve as the foundation for a versatile portfolio. The IPS outlines financial goals, investment objectives, risk tolerance, governance structure, and portfolio guidelines. Perhaps most importantly, it creates alignment between the client and the advisors responsible for managing assets.

This structure has become increasingly important in today’s investment environment, which over the past two decades has included recessions, financial crises, inflation shocks, and sharp market swings.

Without a clear framework, short-term volatility like this can lead to reactive decisions that conflict with long-term goals. Investment policy statements help create discipline during uncertain periods by defining how portfolios should be managed, no matter what’s happening in the markets.

Living document

An effective investment policy statement is not designed to sit untouched in a binder.

While core principles remain stable, parts of the document should evolve as markets, spending needs, and investment objectives change. Asset allocation targets, liquidity needs, benchmarking, and governance considerations may all require adjustments over time.

The IPS creation process itself can also uncover important gaps between expectations and reality. A client may arrive with ambitious return goals, only to discover that achieving them would require accepting more risk or changing spending assumptions.

That conversation promotes clarity around tradeoffs before the market shifts. It reminds investors that short-term market swings alone should not trigger constant revisions to the IPS, which is designed to guide decision-making through volatility.

Creating stability

One of the most overlooked benefits of an investment policy statement is continuity.

Leadership changes happen, and family dynamics evolve. A clearly documented investment framework helps preserve consistency even as circumstances shift.

This becomes especially important during turbulent markets. Heightened volatility can pressure institutions and families into reactive decision-making. A strong IPS establishes roles, responsibilities, and risk parameters in advance, helping reduce reactive behavior during stressful periods.

Think of it as guardrails for long-term investing. The IPS cannot eliminate uncertainty, but it can create structure around how decisions are made when uncertainty rises. An investment policy statement is the operating blueprint behind a long-term investment strategy. For institutions and affluent families alike, making one can improve communication, strengthen governance, and create discipline in increasingly unpredictable markets.
